Memex · memex.li
The agreement that governs your use of Memex, the personal archive that lets you carry your context from one AI to the next.
Memex is a personal AI conversation archive and context-sharing platform. Its purpose is simple: let you migrate from one AI to another without losing context. You import your conversation exports from any AI platform, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek and WhatsApp, and Memex indexes them into a searchable archive you fully own.
From that archive you can search, browse and export your entire history, and you can hand a single secure Memex link to any AI assistant so it instantly understands who you are and what you have already discussed. These Terms set out the rules of that relationship and, in plain terms, how each side is protected.
These Terms & Conditions (the “Terms”) form a legally binding agreement between you (“you” or the “User”) and memex.li, the operator of Memex and the website memex.li (together, “Memex”, “we”, “us” or the “Service”).
By creating an account, accessing, or using the Service in any way, you confirm that you have read, understood and agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated here by reference. If you do not agree, you must not use the Service.
Memex is a personal AI conversation archive and context-portability platform. The core idea is to let you switch between AI assistants without losing context. Specifically, the Service allows you to:
Memex is a tool that organizes and transports your own data. It does not generate, verify, endorse or take responsibility for the content of the conversations you import, and it is not itself an AI assistant.
You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction, to use the Service. By using Memex you represent that you meet this requirement and that you have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement. The Service is not directed to children.
To use most features you must create an account, which you may do using a supported sign-in provider (such as Google or GitHub) or other methods we offer. You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it current.
You are solely responsible for all activity that occurs under your account and for maintaining the confidentiality of your credentials. You must notify us promptly of any unauthorized use. We are not liable for any loss arising from your failure to safeguard your account.
You own your data. The conversations, files, media and other content you import (your “User Content”) remain yours. We do not claim ownership of it, and we do not sell it.
To operate the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, transmit, index, process, back up and display your User Content solely for the purpose of providing, maintaining and securing the Service for you, and to perform technical operations such as keyword extraction, search indexing and generating the context that powers your Memex links. This licence ends when you delete the relevant content or close your account, except for residual copies retained for a limited period for backup, security and legal-compliance purposes as described in our Privacy Policy.
You are solely responsible for your User Content and represent that you have the right to import, store and share it, and that doing so does not violate any law or the rights of any third party.
A central promise of Memex is data portability. The Service is designed so that your context follows you, not the other way around.
You may import conversation exports obtained from the AI platforms and messaging services you use. You are responsible for obtaining those exports lawfully and for ensuring that importing them complies with the terms of service, privacy policies and applicable laws of the platform the data originated from.
The Service expressly allows you to export your data, including all conversations that you previously imported from any AI platform, in machine-readable, portable formats. We will not lock your archive in. You may export your full archive at any time while your account is active. Once data is exported, you are responsible for how you store, transfer and use it.
Continuous import: The Service includes continuous, autonomous operation that works to fetch and parse your data however the original platforms structure or change their exports. This relies on the fact that, by law, those platforms are obligated to let users download their own data, so whatever form that download takes, Memex aims to keep ingesting it for you.
That said, Memex does not control the export or download tools of the original AI platforms, and we cannot guarantee that every future change will be supported immediately. If a platform alters how its data can be exported, the availability or completeness of imports may be temporarily affected while we adapt.
Memex is an independent product. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or in any way officially connected to OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), DeepSeek, Meta (WhatsApp), or any other AI or messaging provider.
All product names, logos, trademarks and brands referenced on the Service are the property of their respective owners and are used only for identification and interoperability purposes. Their use does not imply any endorsement or partnership.
Your use of any third-party platform remains governed by that platform's own terms. You are responsible for complying with them, including when you obtain exports of your own data from those platforms for import into Memex.
The Service lets you generate token-gated Memex links that grant access to some or all of your archived context. This is the mechanism by which you “pass the memex”, to another AI assistant, an application, or a person.
Memex is a powerful tool. Its core purpose is to let you move freely from one AI to another and combine the strengths of several AI assistants. That power must be used in the service of people, never against them. By using the Service you agree to use it lawfully, responsibly, and in line with the core values set out at the end of these Terms.
You agree not to misuse the Service. In particular, you must not:
You must not use Memex, and you must not use any context, output, link or capability obtained through Memex, to research, develop, plan, facilitate, coordinate or enhance any of the following:
If you violate these Terms, we may investigate and take any action we consider appropriate, including issuing a warning, restricting features, and suspending or permanently closing your account, with or without notice.
Where a violation is unlawful and presents a genuine security or safety threat, including targeting of infrastructure, planning of attacks, production of weapons or explosives, social engineering in furtherance of terror, or any plan to cause mass harm, we may, to the extent permitted or required by applicable law, preserve relevant information and report it to the competent authorities and cooperate with any lawful investigation.
We take the responsibility that comes with this tool seriously. You are not routinely surveilled, and we do not read your private archive for general purposes. However, we reserve the right to operate automated safety measures designed to detect a narrow set of severe, unlawful patterns, such as the development of rogue AI, the planning of attacks on infrastructure, the production of explosives or weapons, the discovery of vulnerabilities in public or private infrastructure, or social engineering in furtherance of terror. Where such measures flag activity of this kind, we may suspend access and act as described above.
Security is a core concern of Memex. Because the Service exists to safeguard and transport your most context-rich data, we take reasonable and appropriate technical and organizational measures designed to protect it. These include, among others, per-user data isolation (row-level security), access controls, encrypted backups, and token-gated access to shared context.
However, no method of transmission or storage over the internet is completely secure, and we cannot and do not guarantee absolute security. You acknowledge that you provide and share your data at your own risk. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for unauthorized access to or alteration, loss or destruction of your data resulting from events beyond our reasonable control, including acts of third parties, or from your own failure to protect your credentials or Memex links.
You are responsible for using strong, unique credentials, keeping them confidential, and reporting any suspected security incident to us promptly.
Our handling of your personal data is described in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms. By using the Service you consent to the collection, use and processing of your information as described there.
Excluding your User Content, the Service and everything that makes it up, including the Memex software, source code, design, user interface, the “Memex” name and branding, and all related intellectual property, is owned by memex.li or its licensors and is protected by applicable laws.
We grant you a limited, personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive and revocable licence to use the Service for its intended purpose, subject to these Terms. No rights are granted to you other than as expressly set out here.
The Service is provided on an evolving basis and may include beta or experimental features. We may add, modify, suspend or discontinue any part of the Service at any time, with or without notice. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at any particular time, and we are not liable for any unavailability.
Where reasonably practicable and before permanently discontinuing the Service, we will aim to give you an opportunity to export your data.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, title, or non-infringement.
We do not warrant that the Service will meet your requirements, that imports or exports will be complete or error-free, that defects will be corrected, or that the Service or its servers are free of harmful components. Any material obtained through the Service is accessed at your own discretion and risk.
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event will memex.li, its operators, affiliates, contributors or licensors be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, punitive or exemplary damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill or other intangible losses, arising out of or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us, if any, in the twelve (12) months immediately preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) [e.g. USD 50].
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you; in that case our liability is limited to the smallest extent permitted by law.
You agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless memex.li and its operators and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of or connected with: (a) your User Content; (b) your use or misuse of the Service; (c) your violation of these Terms or any law; or (d) your infringement of any third-party right, including the terms of any AI platform from which you obtained data.
You may stop using the Service and close your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access immediately, with or without notice, if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or to protect the Service or other users.
Upon termination, your right to use the Service ends. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination, including ownership, disclaimers, limitations of liability, indemnification and governing law, will survive. Our data-retention and deletion practices are described in the Privacy Policy.
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree, you must stop using the Service.
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the country or jurisdiction in which you reside, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service will be subject to the courts of your place of residence, and the mandatory consumer-protection law of your jurisdiction continues to apply wherever it grants you greater protection. Nothing in this section deprives you of the protections that the law of your home jurisdiction guarantees you.
Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy constitute the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service and supersede any prior agreements.
Severability. If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force, and the unenforceable provision will be modified to the minimum extent necessary.
No waiver. Our failure to enforce any right or provision is not a waiver of it.
Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms without our consent. We may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
Force majeure. We are not liable for any failure or delay caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
Language. These Terms are written in English, which is the controlling version of any translation.
Questions about these Terms or about privacy can be sent through our contact form. To access, export or delete your data, use the account & data request form. You can also write to memex.li at [postal address].
Memex is one of the most capable tools we know how to build, because it multiplies the power of AI itself. By letting you migrate freely from one AI to another, you can combine the strengths of several assistants, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini and others, to gain different angles on a problem, cross-validate answers, catch and correct hallucinations, and pass one model's output to another in the blink of a second. Used well, this can dramatically accelerate your work; many users report finishing projects meaningfully faster, on the order of 30%, because they extract the maximum from each platform instead of being locked to one.
That is the heart of it: Memex turns AI from a tool that merely follows orders into something closer to a thinking partner, a way to amplify the full potential of a human idea or concept. With that power comes responsibility, and we ask every user to hold to the same principles we do.
These are the core values of Responsible AI, a framework of principles meant to ensure that AI is built and used to benefit humanity, placing safety, fairness and human rights above unchecked technological advancement. Above all else, two values come first, and nothing we build may stand against them:
Use Memex to live and work well, to build, to learn, and to bring out the best in yourself. That is what it is for.
