How to Export Your Gemini Chat History with Google Takeout

Short answer: go to takeout.google.com, click Deselect all, tick Gemini (for your Gems), then open My Activity → All activity data included, deselect everything and tick only Gemini Apps. Create the export, and download it from the email Google sends. The link lasts 7 days. Then upload the archive to Memex to search it next to your ChatGPT and Claude history.

Gemini has no export button inside the app itself. Everything goes through Google Takeout, and the checkbox that holds your conversations is not the obvious one. This guide walks through it.

Step by step

  1. Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with the Google account you use for Gemini.
  2. Click Deselect all at the top of the product list.
  3. Tick Gemini. This exports your Gems (custom Gemini configurations).
  4. Scroll to My Activity and tick it.
  5. Click All activity data included, then Deselect all, tick Gemini Apps, and click OK. This is the part that exports your chats.
  6. Click Next step.
  7. Choose a delivery method: email link, or send directly to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box.
  8. Choose Export once, or a recurring export every two months for one year if you want regular backups.
  9. Pick .zip as the file type and a maximum archive size.
  10. Click Create export.

Google usually finishes the same day, but large accounts can take longer. The download links expire after 7 days.

The mistake almost everyone makes

The product list has a checkbox called Gemini, so it is natural to tick it and stop. That checkbox only covers Gems. Your actual prompts and responses are stored as Gemini Apps activity, which lives inside My Activity. If your export has no conversations in it, this is the reason.

What you get

Google's help center describes the export as covering your Gemini chats, generated media and uploads, plus Gems data. Activity from My Activity is delivered as an HTML or JSON activity log, depending on the format you choose. The structure is designed for completeness, not for reading: prompts and responses are recorded as activity entries, and long histories become one large file.

A few practical notes from Google's documentation:

  • Changes you make between requesting the export and Google building the archive may not be included.
  • Downloading does not delete anything from Google's servers.
  • Accounts in Google's Advanced Protection Program face extra delays and restrictions on Takeout exports as a security measure.
  • Google Workspace accounts may be subject to administrator policies.
