Step by step

Open claude.ai in a browser, or open Claude Desktop.
Click your initials in the lower-left corner.
Choose Settings.

Wait for the email, then download the file while signed in, within 24 hours.

The export is not available from the iOS or Android apps. If you only use Claude on your phone, sign in on a computer once to request it.

Who can export

Anthropic's help center lists self-service export for the Free, Pro and Max plans. On Team and Enterprise plans, only the organization's Primary Owner can run a data export, which covers the organization rather than one person. If you are a member of an organization and want your own conversations, ask your owner.

What the export contains

The export includes your conversation data and account data. Conversations come as structured JSON with the messages, their order and timestamps. That is ideal for a machine and awkward for a person: there is no built-in viewer, and a year of heavy use can produce a very large file.

The limit most people hit: you cannot re-import it

Anthropic does not support migrating exported data into a separate personal Claude account. If you are closing an account, changing email addresses or simply want a copy that outlives your subscription, the export is a snapshot that Claude itself will not read back.

That is where an archive helps. Memex reads the Claude export, indexes every conversation, and serves the result through a link. Any assistant that can fetch a URL, including a new Claude account, can then search your old conversations when it needs them.

Data export vs memory export

Claude also has a separate memory import and export feature: import starts from Claude's memory settings, and you can view or copy out what Claude remembers from the same settings area, or simply ask Claude to write out its memories. It is easy to confuse the two:

The memory feature is useful for tone and preferences. It does not carry the actual reasoning, code, numbers and decisions that live in your conversations. Making your Claude history useful

Once you upload the export to Memex you can:

Search every conversation by keyword, date or topic, alongside your ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek and WhatsApp history.

Troubleshooting

The download link does not work. Make sure you are signed in to the same Claude account that requested the export, and that fewer than 24 hours have passed.

Files you uploaded are missing. The export focuses on conversation and account data. Keep your own copies of important files you uploaded to chats or Projects.

I only see an organization export option. You are in a Team or Enterprise organization. Only the Primary Owner can export.
