Can I transfer my ChatGPT conversations to Claude?

Claude cannot import ChatGPT conversation files directly. Claude's memory import moves a summary of your preferences and context. To bring the full conversations, export them from ChatGPT, load them into an archive like Memex, and give Claude the Memex link or connect it as an MCP server.

How does Claude's memory import work?

In Claude, go to Settings → Memory and choose Start import. You run a provided prompt in ChatGPT to extract what it remembers about you, paste the result into Claude, and Claude turns it into memory entries. Anthropic describes the feature as experimental.

Will I lose my ChatGPT history if I switch to Claude?

Not if you export it first. Request a data export from ChatGPT's Settings → Data controls before you cancel, and keep the ZIP. Loading it into Memex keeps it searchable and readable by Claude.

Is memory import enough on its own?

For tone, preferences and a rough picture of your work, often yes. It does not carry the detail inside conversations, such as code, numbers, sources and the reasoning behind decisions. Most people who switch benefit from both.

How to Move Your ChatGPT History to Claude (Memory and Full Conversations)

Short answer: do two things. First, use Claude's built-in memory import (Settings → Memory → Start import) to move your preferences and a summary of your context. Second, export your full ChatGPT history, upload it to Memex, and give Claude your Memex link or connect Memex as an MCP server. The first makes Claude feel familiar on day one. The second means your actual conversations, with all their detail, come with you.

Two kinds of history, two tools

When people say "move my ChatGPT history to Claude," they usually mean one of two things:

"I want Claude to know me." My name, my job, how I like answers written, the projects I am working on.
"I want my old conversations." The debugging session from March, the business plan numbers, the trip itinerary, the exact wording of a paragraph I liked.

Claude's memory import handles the first. It was never meant to handle the second: it transfers a summary, not conversations. Anthropic's help center is clear that the feature moves memory, and it labels imports as experimental, meaning Claude may not always incorporate everything.

Part 1: import your ChatGPT memory into Claude

In Claude on the web or desktop, open Settings → Memory.
Choose Start import. Claude shows you a prompt to run in your old assistant.
Paste that prompt into ChatGPT. It will list what it has stored about you: preferences, background, projects, corrections.
Copy ChatGPT's answer back into Claude's import box.
Claude processes the text into memory entries you can review and edit.

Anthropic notes that Claude's memory focuses on work-related context, so purely personal details may not be kept.

Part 2: bring your full conversations

Export from ChatGPT

Load the export into Memex

Upload the ZIP to Memex. It parses the conversation trees, keeps images and voice sessions, and makes every conversation full-text searchable. If you also used Gemini or DeepSeek, add those exports to the same archive.

Connect Claude to your archive

You have two options:

Paste your Memex link into a Claude conversation or into a Project's instructions. Claude fetches the archive index, searches it for what it needs, and opens specific conversations as Markdown. The link is read-only by default and you can revoke it at any time.

From then on, a question like "what did I decide about the database schema last spring?" gets answered from your real conversations instead of a summary.

A migration checklist

Export ChatGPT data and download the ZIP within 24 hours.
Upload the ZIP to Memex and confirm your conversation count looks right.
Run Claude's memory import for preferences.
Add your Memex link to the Claude Projects you use most, or connect the MCP server.
Set up Memex Capture if you will keep using more than one assistant, so new prompts keep flowing into the archive.
Only then cancel the old subscription, if that is your plan.

Not only ChatGPT to Claude

The same approach works in any direction: Claude to ChatGPT, Gemini to Claude, or several assistants in parallel. Because the archive sits outside any one vendor, it does not matter which assistant you use next. That is the idea behind a cross-platform AI memory layer.
